Newport, Rhode Island, was our next stop to look at the incredible summer retreats built by the wealthy New York financiers in the 19th century. First stop was the Breakers - a 70 room Italian Renaissance mansion built by the Vanderbilt family and one of the most imposing of the lot.
In a a bid to out-do each other, famous families built in all sorts of styles:
French Chateau
English Tudor
English cottage
Neoclassical - Rosecliff here was used in the filming of 'The Great Gatsby' among other films...
The cliff walk in front of the properties did give us some stunning views...
