Cape Cod and Provincetown

Provincetown, as well as being the first landing point for the Pilgrims on board the Mayflower, is now famous for being a centre of the gay community and it wasn't afraid to show it! Romeo's guesthouse looked pretty wild, with an impressive collection of Barbie dolls. Just watch out for the attack goldfish!

The beach and harbour were pleasant, but we had far more fun wandering amongst the 'alternative' shops...

This shell shop had some brilliant signs!

(In case you can't read them in these pics:
'Unattended Children Will Be Sold As Slaves'
and,
'Do Not Touch - If This Clam Breaks The Scary Lady At The Register Hurts!')

Around Provincetown the Cape Cod dunes are bleak but mysterious...

And the beaches are not that inviting on a rainy Autumn day...

This old house was built by a whaling ship Captain - a profitable business back then...

One of the many Cape Cod lighthouses, in the foreground is an unassuming hut - actually the landing point for the first ever trans-Atlantic cable, layed to allow telegraphs to travel across the sea from Ireland.

The Cape is largely salt-marsh land - no wonder the pilgrims passed it up and moved on...

The only farming there was cranberry farming - which have to grow in a bog!
