On the 4th of September, our first niece arrived in the world - lovely Emily.
Congratulations, Jon and Sarah! Here she is in hospital, newborn.

And this was just yesterday, when we went to visit Emily at home. The new family are settled, happy and doing very well.

Seremban

Seremban is my Dad's hometown, and where his family home is. We lived there for a while when I was a toddler before immigrating to NZ and we went back for many summers in December to visit my grandparents and extended family. I have many fond memories of my family, playing with cousins, swimming at the Club and reading lots and lots of books there. With Dave this time it was a flurry of introducing him to my family and lots of yummy food!

When Dave and I were met by my Mum and Dad at the airport, Mum asked me what Malaysian food I was craving and I didn't hesitate to rattle off a long list. I think Dave was a bit surprised by how long the list was, but seriously, Malaysian food is wonderful! We managed to work our way through most of my favourites including eating satay after stepping off the plane, being treated to wonton noodles in Penang by Uncle SP, waking up early to go to the wet market where they have a superb beef noodle stall, nine-layer cake, my step-grandma's 'red tortoises' (the cakes with a red dot in the photo below), and a the grand finale of a delicious wedding feast personally chosen dish by dish by my Uncle TM. My Mum's best efforts to go to the restaurant that serves Marmite Crab and Duck-Egg Crab before we left for the UK were unfortunately thwarted but I think I will just make up for it next time by ordering double portions of each. Mmmmm.

Dave also earned respect from my family by showing an appreciation of the pungent, creamy king of fruits, the durian. I still think the best description of it remains 'garlic custard', but there are a lot of less favourable descriptions! We watched 'Eat, Pray, Love' recently and the love interest warned Julia Roberts saying "Tastes like dirty feet".

I found it difficult to describe the family house to Dave before we visited - it's a almost a collection of buildings joined up by a roof. My cousin did a wonderful post about the house and being in Malaysia a couple of years ago... My step-grandma had adopted a new dog called Snowy.

Raising a toast at our wedding dinner, for my family who could not come to our wedding in England. I wore a traditional Vietnamese dress called an 'ao dai' we had custom made overnight at a Hoi An tailor shop. We came straight after the photo shoot which is why I look a little different. I still had my false eyelashes, red hair-spray and double-eyelid tape on! It is a strange experience but does seem to make a difference in the photos as I look more glamorous than normal.

My lovely, huge Malaysian family.

July 2nd 2011

Here are some photos of our wedding day from the cameras of our family and friends. We were very lucky to have a beautiful sunny day, perfect for a garden wedding. Everyone was amazing and it was just a dream!

One of the happiest days of my life.

Also a big thanks to our dream team of vendors - Picasso Caterers, Janelle of Lux Hair and Makeup, and Jimmy of BluePrint Wedding Portrait Journalism. You are superb!

Messages from my Grandfather

My maternal grandfather, who I called in Hakka 'Jia Gong' passed away the day before his birthday in 2006. About a week before, I was visiting and staying with my family in his home and I was sick with a virus that left me shivering in hot and cold sweats in a dark room. He looked after me even though he must have been very ill himself, and I managed to get well enough to make it onto my long flight back to NZ on my own.

I wasn't with him when he passed away, nor could I return for the funeral as it was shortly after I had returned to New Zealand. It weighed heavy in my heart that although we had said goodbye that it had been the last time. So it made me very happy when my mother told me her story - that after her father had passed away she had been visited by an unusual blue butterfly which she thought was his spirit.

The day after my wedding, both our families were celebrating with us and reliving the day's events and happily chatting as we unwrapped our gifts. We'd said goodbye to our last guests and I was putting our gifts away in preparation to go on honeymoon the next day. As I was putting away a bamboo bowl given to us by Dave's Aunt, I thought I saw a scrap of paper inside and I flicked my hand at it to sweep it away. It fluttered at me and I found that it was a strange moth or butterfly with light green wings (iridescent, like the dress my mother wore to my wedding), bright green eyes and a furry white body. It was so unusual I showed Dave, who took a photo.

It sat in the bowl, even when I lifted it out of the bay window and shook it to let it outside. I put my hand inside and it calmly walked onto my palm, letting me open my hand out. Then it flew into the air, hovering a few seconds above my fingers before dancing into the blue sky.

I couldn't sleep that night and I wondered who my moth was. I thought perhaps it was my adopted English Uncle, who'd once told me he'd see me again at my wedding but passed away many years ago. When I told my mother later when we met up again in Malaysia she liked my story. But the morning we were planning to go to visit Jia Gong's resting place she said 'You know, that moth was your grandfather'.

He must have chosen a quiet moment amidst the celebrations so that I would notice.

My sisters, my aunts, my mother and I brought incense, paper gold ingots, fruits, flowers and special foods to the memorial park for our departed family members - also including my aunt and both my paternal grandparents.

When we came to Jia Gong's plaque my heart welled to see his photograph and I took my shoes off to go inside and offer him flowers. My foot brushed past something at the threshold and my little sister said 'Butterfly.'

At my toes, a tiny wing.

As I stood there beside my mother the tape of Buddhist monks chanting faltered and skipped. Jia Gong didn't like to see us crying. Once when I was perhaps nine, he had asked his colleague to bring back the puppies that had been at his office at the brickworks because I missed playing with them.

I felt so blessed. It is something to have had someone in your life who has only ever said to you words of love.

Spring Romance

A few weeks ago, we met our wedding photographer Jimmy (of Blue Print) for a pre-wedding photo shoot. We're both used to being on the other side of the camera so it was a great relief to find that our photographer was easy company and and took lovely photos! We had fun posing around the nearby gardens and in Dave's family garden, too. It wasn't all serious - we spent some time talking about the strange habits of the kakapo , being 'paparazzi stalked', picking our way through the daffodils, and taking turns making each other laugh.

Thanks, Jimmy... looking forward to seeing you at the wedding!

Garden Wander

Dave's parents have a lovely garden and it was at its best this weekend, with the spring flowers glowing in the sunshine.

Our sunny visit was made even better with Dave's BBQ skills! Mmmm.
