King's Landing

 Dave and I headed off on a mini-break last weekend to enjoy the most of having a Bank Holiday.  We wanted to make the most of having some energy in the second trimester, and headed to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Dave's been here before on his own, but it was my first time to the city.  If you're a fan of the tv series 'Game of Thrones', you'll probably know that some of the filming took place here as the city's medieval walls are those of King's Landing.  It is one of the most impressive arrivals to a city you could ever have, circling around the city walls...

The walls enclose the city from all sides and include an Arsenale and lots of charming streets and old city houses and shops.

 Walking on the city walls, you can see the expanse of red roof tiles, recently restored after damage from the conflict.  Amazingly the walls stayed intact

Its spectacular location meant that it was a powerful trading city on the Adriatic, second only to Venice.

I loved the colour of the doors.  The city reminded me a lot of Southern Italy and Venice.

The main street is cobbled with shiny pale stone.

You can just about see our favourite gelato shop to the right of the picture, it's close to the Pile Gate.  The generous size of our scoop of ice cream prompted some other tourists to speculate that they'd chosen the wrong shop!  Gelato was amazingly cheap here compared to the UK or Italy, so we had one or two each everyday, the perfect treat in hot weather.

On day three, we even found a filming crew near Pile Gate.  Looks a bit too medieval for Game of Thrones, but perhaps we walked past some famous Croatian actors.

Our big seafood dinner at  Locanda Peskarija - eat quickly as while eating outside, the food can get cold!

Our favourite was the grilled shrimp in our seafood platter for two, but there was also plenty of baby squid, mussels, swordfish, and mackerel.

Dubrovnik is stunning by night, too, prompting lots of post dinner walks.
