More Fun With Cetaceans...

Mum and I also had a fantastic day out whale watching at Kaikoura, although it meant a very early start! We drove up from Christchurch and watched the dawn over Kaikoura beach.

The day was beautifully clear and fantastic for watching whales.

The boats are ultra modern and definitely the best whale watching boats we've been on. Super fast and 360 degrees of viewing platform on both the upper and lower decks. Cool colour scheme too!

A sperm whale, swimming the deep ocean trench that comes so close to the shore in Kaikoura, surfaces to replenish his blood oxygen levels.

Then, sated, he plunges back into the depths, with a little wave good-bye from his tail.

The common dolphins were also about in abundence, amusing the tourists while we waited for whales to surface:

They were feeling very 'frisky'! Apparently they spend large amounts of their free time mating.
