The Big Build - Week 1

Week one of the Big Build! Time to put the last year of planning into action and extend our little house out into the garden.

First things first, we had to move our old shed out of the way. Above is a garden strewn with shed bits, and below they are starting to go back together again.

Of course, nothing is ever simple, and it soon transpired that the base was half rotted away and needed patching up with some scrap wood.

So then it was the builders turn to do some work - stripping out the concrete (and our beloved pond).

However once they got the mini-digger on site things soon began progressing...

The soil layer is very thin here, and they soon hit solid chalk ground. Good news as it means we get away with minimal foundations (and so no extra money). The builder told me they once had to dig down 4 metres!

It is quite bizarre seeing all that chalk there, never knowing it was there before...

After 2 days of digging they had nowhere left for the soil to go out front, and work stopped until they could get a grabber lorry in...

1 week down - 11 to go... If the weather holds and all goes to plan!

Gees! Chalk indeed! It's amazing what you find when you dig. Our is allllll clay. Reactive clay at that. Our area is not as bad as some areas in Melbourne which causes the house to twist and crack.

Yeah lots of Britain is clay too - we are lucky to live where we do. Brings geology to life a little when you see it in your back garden!

thanks for sharing the development. Messy but exciting! It's quite fun to see the new extension taking shape from paper to actual rooms.

WoW! I have never seen earth like that! If you add compost to that will it improve the soil for gardening?
