Last Sunday, Dave and I bundled up warmly and drove through the tunnel in the side of the Port Hills to the port for the Lyttelton Festival of Lights. It also celebrates Matariki, the Maori New Year. The main draw for us was to see the Masquerade Parade which starts outside Lyttelton Main School. It was a small but well-formed local parade, mostly school children and their shy parents, as well as a few colourful characters.
The streets of Lyttleton were decorated nicely - and hot dog stands were doing very good business in the evening chill.
Dave also used the quiet weekend to make a visit to the delightful (and free) NZ Air Force Museum based in Wigram:
It featured, among others, the DC Dakota used for the Queen's last visit to New Zealand (top left). Makes you think how long ago the Queen last visited to look at the ancient looking airliner! It also has the spitfire used to film "Reach for the Sky" - quite an incredible true story about Douglas Bader, who lost both of his legs before the war and still went on to become a great WW2 fighter ace.
