Winter Weekend

What a wonderful wintery weekend! On Saturday I met up with Clare at Angel Station and we did some last minute Christmas shopping and also stocked up on art supplies (oh, new art supplies!) at Cass Art Shop. It's better than being a kid in a candy store.... We found a lovely cafe called Mocondo in Camden Passage which does a yummy strawberry cheesecake, and mulled tea with apple and ginger. Mmm, cheesecake.

After heading home and unloading my new treasures, Dave picked me up and we headed off to his parents' home near Chalfont St Peters to housesit while they are away on their latest adventure. This time they are visiting Cambodia. Can you tell how cold it is? Here's the water on the top of the birdbath. Brrrrrr.

We went for a stunning Sunday drive out in the country and went past the Prime Minister's country escape; Chequers.

Then we went on a walk to a beautiful misty lookout on Coombe Hill, where I saw and learnt about inversion layers and thermals and admired the colours in the fields below.

I picked up some leaves from the ground on our country walk, so beautiful. These posts are fast becoming a joint effort and these are Dave's pictures.

A Westie gathering in the woods.

A Mr Darcy moment?

We went to Great Missenden to see the Roald Dahl Museum. Here's Dave winding the handle to listen to Felicity Dahl talking about her husband... I like the monkey, he looks like a big version of my teen years heroine Jane Goodall's childhood friend, Jubilee. Liccy Dahl is talking about how Roald Dahl used to cheat at the biggest onion growing competition! But more on the Dahl museum tomorrow.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend too, and that you stayed nice and warm!

Greater London Pubs

A jackpot of British animal pubs this weekend... Here are the Eagle, the Swan, and the Elephant & Castle in Amersham.

..And this is the White Lion in Great Missenden, due to re-open in Spring (hopefully with a freshly painted sign with a White Lion!).

San Francisco Song

You called me after midnight,
it must have been three years since we last spoke
I slowly tried to bring back
the image of your face from the memories so old
I tried so hard to follow,
but didn't catch a half of what had gone wrong,
said "I don't know what I can save you from"
I don't know what I can save you from
I asked you to come over,
and within half an hour,
you were at my door
I had never really known you,
but I realized that the one you were before,
had changed into somebody for whom
I wouldn't mind to put the kettle on
Still I don't know what I can save you from
I don't know what I can save you from

Yes, it's true... I used to be a Gap Girl in San Francisco! It was fun and memorable working there because it was their flagship store and I met lots of lovely people while I worked there. The reason why I've brought this all up is because I worked at Gap Embarcardero over the Christmas period 5 years ago (oh so long ago) and fell in love with a song on their seasonal soundtrack. I tried hard but was never able to find out the artist or the title.

I found the song tonight by good fortune! It's called 'I Don't Know What I Can Save You From' and it's by Kings of Convenience, a recent discovery I've been listening to. The song brings back lots of happy memories, and it's really made my day.

Here are my Kiwi buddies Marissa, Joel and Hilary. The lovely Hamiltonian Hilary is now living in Putney and I meet up with her every now and again in Earl's Court.

My girly gang in Santa Cruz (in winter!). Teresa, Francesca, Stella and Anna.

Yay, San Francisco days! A big shout out to Stella if she's out there. We used to talk about how we both wanted to explore Europe and agreed to save hard so we could meet up and travel around. Come over to London, girl. (-: I miss you.

Sunday, Sunday

This weekend was laid back and easy, just what I needed! I'm all rested and (just about) ready for work tomorrow. Plans to go to Iceland are firmed up for early January, including having booked the exciting Super Jeep Northern Lights Tour and a place to stay. It will be a lot of fun these next few weeks with my first British Christmas and Iceland on the horizon.

Evidence

Paula posted some pics of me hard at work sightseeing in Oslo.

Here she is!

It really is fun to stay at a hostel and have cool room-mates. Can't wait to visit her in her new hometown of Edinburgh.

Kate wants to go in January-February. Keen as a bean!

Eton on a Sunday

An Eton boy in uniform....

It's been a very cold weekend, but we managed to get out of Central London on Sunday to visit Dave's parents. They took us out for a walk to a lovely church with a memorial garden, famous for being the resting place of poet Thomas Gray; then onwards to Eton. I felt very privileged to be shown around Greater London, even sighting my first robin in the Evans garden and also the Queen's standard flying from the tower at Windsor Castle. We had some mulled wine while walking to stave off the cold, then went home to a delicious meal (with NZ wine!). A very big thank you to the Evans family for a warm welcome and a stunning Sunday! I am a very lucky girl.

There is a lot of mistletoe on this tree - very seasonal.

An Eton flag flying in the wind.

The river separating Eton from Windsor.

Pictures of Eton by Dave - apologies as my photo-editing software has given up on me today... no reflection on the photographer at all.

Char & Kate in Oslo

Here I am as promised! Thanks for your patience. Are you all bundled up nice and warm for a quick glimpse of Norway? My holiday with Kate crept up on us all of a sudden, and before we knew it we were on a flight bound for the capital. It was a great experience, even as we entered the country. The man at the passport counter was so friendly. the conversation went:

'Is this your first time in Norway?'
'Well, yes, since the last time I was here I was one.'
'Were you born here?'
'No, my parents travelled with me when I was very young'.
'Welcome back to Norway. Are you travelling alone?'
'No, with my friend Kate.'
'Oh! Ask her over here and I'll stamp you both at the same time. *stamp stamp* Have a great time in Norway, girls!'

And that set the tone for the rest of the trip.

Here are some pictures from my first trip to Oslo... thanks, Mum! Her challenge to me was to find the little boy in the left picture, she calls him my 'first love'. I am happy to report that after 25 years -though he hasn't grown any taller; like me, my friend has found a sweetheart of his own.

Dave did ask me if I met any tall blond Norwegians who took my fancy and I have to admit, I did fall in love with a tall handsome Norwegian, though not blond. He's in the Royal Military... and seemed to enjoy having me pat his nose.

The Autumn colours and tree-lined avenues were very beautiful. Oslo was not as cold as we'd feared and we were toasty and warm with thin wool layers, a coat, scarf, hat and gloves. The city is very walkable, about 15min to get from one end of town to the other with very light traffic. Kate and I met Paula from Edinburgh, as she was one of our fantastic dorm mates at the Perminalen. She tagged along on our first full day in town before heading northwards by train to see her friend Nick Harper perform. We went to the Nasjaonalgalleriet (National Museum; of Art, and also Design). It houses many Munch paintings including the definitive 'The Scream' painting. It is a very powerful piece of art and does not fail to impress.

On Day Two, Kate and I bought a 24 hour travel pass and made a beeline for the Vigeland Statue Park, then the Folkemuseum (Norwegian Museum of Cultural History) and the Viking Ship Museum. It was a pleasant walk from the bus stop to the Park, taking in the fancy consulates on the way there. I was amused to see that the Chilean Embassy was in a block of flats and that someone had a sense of humour with their garden ornament...

Here is the wonderful and weirdly fascinating Vigelandsparken (the Vigeland Park), the work of Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) with more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and cast iron.

Does anyone know who might live in this.....?

I thought something cool like a stork!

I loved the Norsk Folkemuseum with its 155 traditional buildings from different Norwegian regions and traditional costume collection. In the summer there are folkdance lectures, handicrafts and farming activities.

A pretty French garden at the Parsonage, and the fairytale medieval Stave Church.

I guess having trees grow on your thatch adds to the insulation.

Painter's studio.

Lovely Norwegian colours.

Kate in the 60s apartment.

Now, I must tell you about Norwegian food! Kate and I braved a walk in the cold and dark to get to a traditional Norwegian pub and eat a Norwegian meal. She opted for the fried trout and I had boiled halibut, to the right. Very tasty! Other Norwegian specialties are: reindeer and moose, and Christmas meals lutefisk (fish preserved in lye) and rakfisk (fermented fish). Kate was on a bit of a vege streak so I didn't try the reindeer out of sensitivity and I'm afraid the 'fisks' were beyond my bravery.

I never expected to discover a cafe serving yummy waffles at the Armed Forces Museum, but there you go.

Norwegian icecream. Yes, it's still popular even when it's so cold you can walk home with it without the icecream melting.

Here is how you DIY (Norway can be $$). Lots of rye crispbread, a 'dirty bird' (Kate's nickname for hot roast chicken), Norwegian gingerbread, julesmarsipan, dark sesame chocolate, cherry flavoured cheese spread, salad, tomatoes and other randomness from ICA, a supermarket. There is also a supermarket called KIWI! There is a picture of me in front of one of these somewhere, I'll find it later. The two words of Norwegian Kate and I learned whilst on holiday were 'Trek' (Pull) and 'Skyv' (Push) so we managed to get through a few large wooden doors!

The Akerhus Slott (Fortress) and Forvasmuseet (Armed Forces Museum).

Kate and I have still got to do the grand swap of photos, so I'll post the ones of me as they come. Hope you enjoyed having a quick trip around Norway with us!
