Hi ho, hi ho

...its back to work the builders go!

After a frustrating 2 weeks of sub-zero temperatures, the snow has finally melted and the building work can crack on. The final job, which has held us up all this time, was to render the blockwork.

The window frames have gone in too:

We've also had to say good bye to our beloved 60s kitchen. Here it is, on the way out:

Next time we post, we are hoping to have our bifolding doors in and the scaffold down. Yay!

...very little building work took place :(

Roof!

Hooray! A few dry days at last and we finally have our roof on. At last it can start drying out inside...

The roof is a 'cut' roof, hand made on site, with purlins to support the rafters. Most roofs these days are made from pre-constructed 'trusses' instead but I like the traditional style still... It leaves more storage space behind that's for sure!

 Felt is laid to increase waterproofing, and then battens for the tiles

These are reclaimed roof tiles, looking quite similar to the existing ones. All that remains is the ridge tiles and we are done!

(well, apart from rendering, windows, doors, guttering, roof of utility room, and all the internal stuff too!!)

Result!

So our kitchen sold for the princely sum of £280 for anyone interested! What a result. To think we were considering chucking it away into a skip! Thank goodness for eBay - and the retro revival apparently going on...

Snails Pace

Oh dear, the British winter weather is not being kind to us, and building work has been progressing at a glacial pace. It is even more frustrating as we are so close now to putting the roof on and not having to worry any more about the elements.

Here we have a rare photo indeed - builders on site and working (sort of)!!!

We now have joists at 1st floor and roof level! Finally can see the full shape of the upstairs part!

This is the current stage of the build, now shut down for Christmas.

And these pics show the complex detailing where the rsj for our roof joists has to be supported.

Now all we need to do is put some timbers up and we have a fully pitched roof! It can then start drying out at last (which it needs to do big time!!!)
